The hunt is on for a stellar team to support our Antarctic Operations at Scott Base and in the field during the 2022/23 season.
We are seeking a team of 40, from engineers, mechanics, domestics and chefs that keep the home fires burning, to support crew for field camps and the traverse across the Ross Ice Shelf.
Scott Base has been the hub of New Zealand's activities in Antarctica since 1957. It’s remote, so the small team that works at this incredible location needs to work well together, focus on safety and integrate successfully into the small community lifestyle.
At Antarctica New Zealand, we proudly ensure that Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are valued, protected and understood. Our role is to support world-leading science and environmental protection, and to raise public awareness of the global significance of the continent and surrounding Southern Ocean.
Joining the team is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to New Zealand’s scientific legacy, says Antarctica New Zealand’s General Manager of Communications and People, Megan Nicholl.
“It’s a chance to see a beautiful, harsh part of the world up close. These roles make our corner of Antarctica run – we keep people warm and fed, and keep the lights, water and heating on. Everyone carries responsibility for keeping Scott Base ticking over, with a spirit of caring for everyone there and for those that will come after us.
“Most importantly, our crew provide the lifelines for scientific teams and data collection – that’s why we’re there. The world needs answers from Antarctica about sea level rise, and how climate change might affect the atmosphere, oceans and ecosystems. Our people help protect the planet by supporting that science.”
It’s an exciting time to work at Scott Base - the redevelopment of the base has the green light and New Zealand’s scientific endeavours are informing New Zealand and the world’s climate change response at the highest level.
