New additions to the Redevelopment project team

Antarctica New Zealand welcomes The Building Intelligence Group and Rawlinsons to the Scott Base Redevelopment Project. These New Zealand companies have been appointed to the project team as Design Lead and Quantity Surveyor & Cost Planner, respectively.

Scott Base Redevelopment Project Manager, Simon Shelton, says the two companies are a welcome addition to the team and complement the other high-performing organisations tasked to redesign Antarctica New Zealand’s home on the ice.

“The aim of the project is to provide a fit-for-purpose, safe and healthy environment for people living and working at Scott Base - one which drives high-quality science and enables the protection of the Antarctic environment”, says Mr Shelton.

“This is a design-intensive year for the project and I am delighted to have The Building Intelligence Group on board to coordinate the design of the new base”, he says. “Likewise, Rawlinsons will play an instrumental role in costing the project, which will support our final funding bid.”

Ian Currie, Project Director for The Building Intelligence Group, says they feel privileged to be able to work on such a unique and significant project.

“The project presents one-of-a-kind challenges because of the remoteness and the environment which has excited our team. They’re highly motivated to be working alongside Antarctica New Zealand and their partners to deliver something that is so important for the world and New Zealand”, he says.

Rawlinsons was engaged to provide cost estimating of the design selected by Cabinet in 2019.

“The redevelopment of Scott Base is the largest ever project undertaken by Antarctica New Zealand and is much more than just what is being built. Where, how and when it is built, and in time who builds it, are all vitally important for the long-term success of the project – particularly for the staff and contractors at Scott Base who live and work there for anything from a few days to over a year at a time. We’re looking forward to playing our part alongside Antarctica New Zealand and the high-powered project team to deliver this project successfully over the coming months and years.”

The Building Intelligence Group and Rawlinsons join the wider project team, which includes Jasmax-Hugh Broughton Architects, WSP, and Steensen Varming, charged with developing a safe, fit-for-purpose facility that will serve New Zealand well into the future.
