Antarctica is 'supercool'

We had our first negative 40 degree day this week – that was negative 40 and no wind! Ideal conditions for one of my favourite Antarctic science tricks – making boiling water disappear!!

How? Well if you throw a cup of boiling water into the air at that temperature it [almost] instantly evaporates creating a beautiful mist of ice and supercooled water droplets?! This is definitely something I wasn't told about in school!

ANZAC Day 2014

Winter is truly here – the supply ship was unloaded back in February, we had our last freshies (fresh fruit and veg) delivery at the start of March and the last flight to/from the ice was about 6 weeks ago.  There are 15 of us wintering over this year, 11 Antarctica New Zealand staff and 4 Antarctic Heritage Trust conservators.

Introducing our Winter Chef Bobbie

Antarctica – once she gets under your skin you just can't get enough of her!  I feel the same mixture of excitement, privilege and wonder today as I did the first time I stepped foot on the ice.

My name is Bobbie and this is my 3rd season on the ice as Antarctica New Zealand's Winter Chef and I wouldn't rule out applying for another season or two – it's truly magical down here and the experience gets better and better each time I come down.
