TV3 Firstline reporter Simon Shepherd looks at the role Antarctica plays in determining global climate and how New Zealand's scientists are at the forefront of that research.

Steve Pointing from Auckland University of Technology's School of Applied Sciences discusses what NZARI (New Zealand Antarctic Research Institute) is doing for Antarctic Science and highlights some of the cutting edge research it's supporting this Antarctic season.  This includes using the past to predict the future by looking at historic CO2 levels in Antarctica,  Antarctica's ice free land to forecast and mitigate change in a pristine environment in the Dry Valleys and using apex preditors as indicators of ecosystem health in the Ross Sea and the impact commercial fishing could have on them.
