Antarctica New Zealand announces Peter Beggs as new Chief Executive

The Directors of Antarctica New Zealand are pleased to announce Peter Beggs has been appointed Chief Executive following the departure of Lou Sanson to take up the role of Director General at the Department of Conservation (DOC).

Beggs, who was born and bred in Christchurch, has held senior executive roles world-wide, most recently as Country Director for Thales New Zealand. There are many operational parallels between Thales and Antarctica New Zealand, most notably that both organisations are required to perform difficult tasks in challenging environments and have highly skilled and motivated teams.

Chairman, Rob Fenwick, said he believed [Peter] Beggs' international private sector experience will add value to Antarctica New Zealand's performance in one of New
Zealand's most important outposts. "He has a strong record in team leadership and brings a wealth of international experience, passion and enthusiasm which is invaluable in the rapidly changing world in which we operate."

Beggs will bring a strong focus on Health and Safety, engineering and development of innovative solutions to the organisation and is passionate about forming relationships where all parties can flourish. He sees these relationships as key for the future development and learning from Antarctic science.

After spending 22 years working overseas Beggs says he is looking forward to bringing his family back to his home town of Christchurch and to fulfil one of his childhood dreams.

"As a child I remember watching the US Starlifters at Christchurch International Airport, thinking how huge they were and how amazing it would be to be on board and travelling to Antarctica. It's a privilege for anyone to go down to Antarctica but to lead the organisation that enables us to learn from that environment and keep it pristine is a real honour."

"There's so much that we can learn from Antarctica that will make a real difference to us in New Zealand and the rest of the world. I'm looking forward to meeting the entire team at Antarctica New Zealand and working with them when I start my role next year to build on the fantastic achievements of my predecessors and take Antarctica New Zealand to the next level."

Beggs will take up the role as chief executive at Antarctica New Zealand early in the New Year.
